How to delegate, and why I want your questions

Throughout this month I’m going to be writing and talking about how to delegate. Partly because I’m super excited that my workshop Delegation Mastery  is finally going live in London on 7 November (more information here), and partly because it’s the core to every successful business.

Why knowing how to delegate is the biggest secret of success

The most successful leaders don’t attempt to do everything themselves, master everything themselves, or control everything themselves. Instead, they work out what needs to be done, and find the right person to do it. Effective delegation is how Richard Branson created his empire, stretching from toiletries to airlines. It’s how every top team coach works, from sales management to football.

And why we find delegation so hard…

Delegation doesn’t come naturally to us as humans. It triggers lots of deep-seated fears: losing control, losing status, or damaging a relationship.

Even when we do manage to hand over work, we’re not necessarily good at distinguishing between real trust – based on knowledge and certainty – and blind faith, which is nothing more than a surface check and optimism.

No-one is born a natural delegator

Effective delegators weren’t made that way. Instead, it’s a skill they’ve learnt, and practiced, over and over, making lots of mistakes, and getting better at it every time. So if you think yourself as ‘naturally’ bad at it, it simply means you haven’t spend enough time learning how to do it really well.
